Class Descriptions

Junior Program (children aged 3 by Dec 31)

Classes run Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 11:30. This class is made up of 16 three year old children, one French-speaking teacher, one English-speaking teacher and a daily duty parent. Together we learn to share, take turns, explore and have fun within a casual morning play schedule.

Senior Program (children aged 4 by Dec 31)

Classes run Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30 to 11:30. One English-speaking teacher, one French-speaking teacher, 16 four year olds, and a duty parent work, share and play together to develop cognitive and social readiness skills aimed at making the move into kindergarten and beyond smooth and stress free.

Afternoon Program (3.5 year olds and 4 year olds)

Classes run Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00. This class of 16 three and four year olds, two teachers (one French-speaking and one English-speaking) and a duty parent work and play together learning social and cognitive skills. In this class similar goals are sought as in our other classes but in a mixed age group format.

Second Language Instruction

All classes have one English teacher and one French teacher at all times.  The dominant language in the classroom alternates weekly ie. The week led by the French teacher has all songs, stories and teacher led activities in French and vice versa when the English teacher is leading. The second language component is designed to promote a positive attitude toward each child’s second language and familiarity with many basic vocabulary words. Routine instructions are always given in bilingually. The exact delivery of the second language is highly dependent on the language composition in the classroom. A classroom with even distribution of English and French children will hear both languages more frequently and  at a higher vocabulary level than a class composed of predominately English children.

Special Events

Special events include field trips, a Halloween party, a Christmas show, and an end of the year beach party.

Our Philosophy

Our dedicated early childhood educators and committed parents strive to:

  1. Create a bridge between the child’s home and “the World”; helping to cultivate joy, wonder and optimism for life;
  2. Empower children with play opportunities that support physical, perceptual and intellectual development by recognizing the individual needs of the ‘whole’ child;
  3. Provide a safe and stimulating environment of warmth, support and guidance for healthy social and emotional development;
  4. Managed co-operatively; this means active parent participation in the day-to-day operations as well as the overall running of the school;
  5. Maintain its history of effective independence and stability through self-reliance, tuition fees and community fundraising efforts;
  6. Reflect the rich diversity of Chelsea, its love of the natural environment and its desire to be a healthy and vibrant multi-cultural community of friends and neighbours.
